Verified September 25, 2026. A Nigerian citizen travelling to the UK for tourism, to see friends or family, or for another permitted short visit normally needs a Standard Visitor visa before boarding. Nigeria is named in the UK visitor visa-national list. An overseas work permit or residence card does not by itself remove that passport-based requirement.
The practical test: a genuine, affordable visit
Start with one clear sentence describing the trip: for example, two weeks to attend a sister’s graduation and spend several days sightseeing. Then make the dates, destination, accommodation and spending estimate agree with that purpose. UK visitor rules also require an intention to leave after the visit and prohibit ordinary work under this route. A proposed long stay without a convincing reason can raise questions even when the maximum permitted period is up to six months.
If your income comes from a business
Nigerian applicants who run a company or work independently may not have payslips. In that case, explain the business model in plain language and show records that connect sales, contracts or invoices to money actually received. Separate business turnover from personal funds available for the trip. If your bank account contains a major recent transfer, explain its source rather than relying on the resulting balance alone. No UK rule sets one guaranteed naira balance for every visitor.
Employees can instead link their job, salary and approved leave to the travel dates. Students may show an academic calendar that explains a short break. If a UK host pays for accommodation or living expenses, identify exactly what they cover and provide support for the relationship and their ability to help. Sponsorship does not erase the need to explain the applicant’s own circumstances and return plans.
Apply from the place you lawfully live
The official application is completed online, then identity and documents are provided as directed at a visa application centre. If you are a Nigerian national resident in another country, select the application location that reflects your actual residence and be prepared to document legal residence there. The government’s application instructions state that the six-month fee is currently £135 and applications can generally be submitted up to three months before travel. A decision usually takes three weeks after biometrics and documents, but individual cases and available appointments vary.
Common avoidable weaknesses
Do not submit inconsistent employment dates, unexplained account credits, a host letter that contradicts the form, or a budget that omits key costs. Translate any supporting document not in English or Welsh as required. Disclose a past refusal accurately. A paid “priority” add-on, where offered, is not a promise of approval. Recheck current UK rules before applying, particularly if your actual plan involves study, employment, marriage or relocation rather than a visit.
