UK Visa Requirements for Indian Citizens: Visitor Guide

Reviewed September 25, 2026. An Indian citizen visiting Britain for a holiday, family gathering or permitted short business activity normally needs a UK Standard Visitor visa before departure. India’s inclusion in the official visa-national list is the reason; living in another country or owning a residence card there does not by itself change the rule attached to an Indian passport.

Match the visa to what you will actually do

A visitor may tour the country, see family or undertake permitted business activities, but cannot use this route to take ordinary paid work or live in the UK through repeated long visits. An applicant attending a graduation, conference or family event should explain the event’s date and how it fits within a short trip. If the real plan is a degree course, a long-term job or moving to join family, use a different route. The label “tourist visa” is often used online, but the official route is Standard Visitor.

Indian employee, business owner or student: what changes?

The UK visitor test is the same, yet the most useful evidence depends on your circumstances. An employed applicant can show a current role, approved leave and ongoing salary. A business owner may need to explain business activity, registration and how income shown in the bank account is earned. A student can connect the visit to an academic break and show continuing study. Do not upload every record you own: select documents that answer a real question about purpose, finances and return plans.

For a multi-city UK itinerary, estimate transport and accommodation costs as well as flights. If one person funds a family trip, identify that person in each related application and show that the support is affordable. There is no one official minimum bank balance that guarantees approval. A balance that appears large but cannot be reconciled with your stated earnings may be less useful than a clear six-month financial history and a sensible trip budget.

Submitting from India or elsewhere

Apply online through GOV.UK, pay the government fee, then follow the instructions for identity and supporting documents at the relevant visa application centre. The official Standard Visitor application guide currently lists £135 for a six-month visa, allows an application up to three months before intended travel and gives a usual decision time of three weeks once biometrics and documents are provided. These are not appointment or approval guarantees. Confirm the live details before booking non-refundable travel.

If you are an Indian national legally resident outside India, explain where you live and apply through the appropriate process for that location. Documentary evidence of legal residence may be relevant. A UK invitation letter can help explain accommodation or support, but it cannot override weak evidence about the applicant’s own circumstances.

Before pressing submit

Check that names, passport number, travel dates, employment dates and financial figures are consistent. Translate documents not in English or Welsh to the required standard. Disclose past refusals truthfully. A well-organized application explains why you are going, who pays, why the visit is temporary and why you can reasonably return afterward. Visa issuance and admission at the border are decisions for UK authorities, not any adviser or website.
