Checked September 25, 2026. Pakistani passport holders planning a short holiday, family visit or permitted business trip to the UK generally need a Standard Visitor visa before travelling. A UK relative’s invitation does not replace the visa, and a Pakistani citizen living in another country does not become eligible for an ETA merely because of that residence. Check the UK visitor visa-national list for the controlling rule and its exceptions.
Start with the purpose of the trip
The Standard Visitor route covers tourism, seeing relatives and friends, and certain other permitted activities. It is not permission to take a UK job or make the UK your main home. If a trip is really about long-term study, employment or joining a partner to live together, choose the relevant immigration route instead of trying to fit it into a holiday application. A short trip can still be refused if the stated purpose conflicts with the evidence.
Build a coherent application from Pakistan
UK decision-makers assess whether you are a genuine visitor, will leave at the end of the visit and can meet the trip’s reasonable costs without prohibited work or public funds. Show a realistic itinerary, the length of leave you can take and how your normal commitments continue after the return date. An employee might use a current job letter, payslips and approved leave; a self-employed applicant might use business registration and records that explain income; a student can explain term dates and enrolment. These are examples of useful evidence, not a universal mandatory checklist.
Make the financial story easy to follow. If savings have grown through salary, business income or a property sale, give records that connect the deposits to that source. Large unexplained credits can create questions, while a modest but credible budget may be more persuasive than a large unexplained closing balance. There is no published fixed bank-balance requirement for every Pakistani visitor. Compare your accessible funds with airfare, accommodation and daily spending for your actual itinerary.
Visiting family in Britain?
Explain your relationship to the host, where you will stay and who will pay each cost. If a relative pays for accommodation or the trip, provide evidence of the relationship, what support is offered and that the sponsor can provide it. The host’s letter is supporting evidence, not an approval certificate. If you are paying for your own trip, say so clearly; do not create a sponsorship narrative merely because you have family in the UK.
Apply and plan the timing
Complete the official online form, pay the stated fee and follow the instructions for identity and biometrics at a visa application centre. The current government page says a six-month Standard Visitor visa costs £135, applications can normally be made up to three months before travel and a decision usually comes within three weeks after identity and documents are provided. Fees, appointment availability and decision times can change, so recheck the official Standard Visitor application page before paying or making non-refundable bookings.
Use the official visa-application-centre location offered during the process, not an agent promising a guaranteed decision. Supply translations for documents not in English or Welsh in the format UKVI requires. Read each answer against your passport, travel history, income records and intended dates before submitting. A prior refusal should be disclosed and addressed honestly rather than hidden.
Quick decision check
If you hold a Pakistani passport, expect to apply in advance even if you work or study abroad. If you hold a different passport, the rules attached to that passport may differ. If your purpose changes from a short visit to work or settlement, recheck the immigration route before applying. This guide is independent information, not legal advice or a guarantee of entry.
