U.S. Visa Requirements for Bangladesh Citizens: Application Guide

Next review due: December 2026, or earlier if U.S. visa rules change.

This guide explains the U.S. visa process for citizens of Bangladesh. The correct route depends on your purpose of travel, passport, current residence and immigration history. A tourist normally applies for a B-2 or combined B-1/B-2 visitor visa unless they qualify for the Visa Waiver Program and an approved ESTA.

Country-specific note: The reciprocity schedule lists B-1, B-2 and B-1/B-2 as one-entry visas valid for 3 months with no reciprocity fee. The State Department also lists Bangladesh among countries subject to a visa-bond pilot; check the current notice before paying or booking. Read the official visa-bond notice.

Important: A visa lets you travel to a U.S. port of entry and request admission; it does not guarantee entry or a particular length of stay. A Customs and Border Protection officer makes the admission decision.

Which U.S. visa may apply?

Purpose Typical route
Holiday, tourism or visiting relatives B-2 or combined B-1/B-2 visitor visa
Qualifying business meetings or negotiations B-1 or combined B-1/B-2
Study for credit or ordinary employment Usually a different student or work category
Short tourism for an eligible VWP passport ESTA, if all Visa Waiver Program conditions are met

Do not use a visitor visa for ordinary employment, degree study or permanent residence. If your real purpose is different from tourism or permitted business activity, review the appropriate U.S. visa category before applying.

Country-specific reciprocity snapshot

The State Department reciprocity page for Bangladesh lists the visa issuance fee, number of entries and validity period for each visa classification. For the B-1/B-2 row, the current schedule is: No reciprocity fee; one entry; 3-month validity for B-1/B-2. This reciprocity information is separate from the non-refundable visa application fee and can change, so check the live official page immediately before payment or travel.

Citizens applying for an immigrant visa may also need civil documents listed on the same country page. Nonimmigrant visitor applicants do not automatically need every immigrant civil document; follow the instructions generated for your case.

Basic eligibility

A visitor-visa applicant should be able to explain a genuine temporary purpose, a realistic trip length, how the trip will be paid for and why they will return after the visit. The officer may consider employment, study, family, property, finances, travel history and previous immigration compliance. There is no universal bank-balance number that guarantees approval.

Applicants should answer every question accurately. A previous refusal, overstay, arrest, removal or visa cancellation should not be hidden. False statements or altered documents can create much more serious problems than an ordinary refusal.

How citizens of Bangladesh apply

  1. Confirm that B-1/B-2 matches the real purpose of travel.
  2. Complete Form DS-160 online for each applicant.
  3. Upload a compliant photograph and print the confirmation page.
  4. Follow the U.S. embassy or consulate instructions for Bangladesh or your country of lawful residence.
  5. Pay the current non-refundable visitor-visa application fee.
  6. Book the required appointment and provide biometrics where instructed.
  7. Attend the interview with a concise, truthful explanation of your trip.
  8. Wait for passport-return instructions and check every visa detail if approved.

U.S. Department of State guidance generally directs nonimmigrant applicants to schedule at the embassy or consulate in their country of residence or nationality. For Bangladesh, follow the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka instructions. Because visa-bond rules and appointment procedures can change, review the official notice immediately before submitting the application.

Documents to prepare

  • passport valid for travel and meeting applicable validity rules;
  • DS-160 confirmation page;
  • fee-payment receipt, if required before the interview;
  • photograph if the online upload did not work;
  • employment, study, business or family evidence relevant to returning home;
  • credible evidence of funds and who will pay;
  • itinerary and first U.S. accommodation details;
  • previous U.S. visas, refusals or immigration records when requested; and
  • any additional documents listed by the responsible U.S. embassy.

An invitation letter can explain a family visit but does not guarantee approval. Avoid buying non-refundable tickets before a visa is issued. The Department of State advises applicants to wait for the decision before making final travel plans.

Fees and processing

The U.S. Department of State currently lists the non-petition-based visitor-visa application fee as US$185. Some nationalities may also have a separate reciprocity fee after approval; the Bangladesh schedule linked below is the controlling source. Appointment availability and administrative processing vary by location and season.

Interview preparation

Review the DS-160 before the appointment. Be ready to explain your occupation or study, trip dates, destination, funding and reasons to return. Bring only relevant, genuine documents. Short answers are fine when they are complete; memorised speeches and inconsistent details can weaken credibility.

ESTA and Visa Waiver Program note

Bangladesh is not listed among the current Visa Waiver Program countries. A Bangladeshi passport holder normally needs the appropriate visitor visa for a U.S. tourist or business trip.

Common refusal and delay risks

  • unclear purpose or an itinerary that does not match the application;
  • funds that do not fit the applicant’s income and circumstances;
  • weak evidence of ties outside the United States;
  • inconsistent answers between DS-160, documents and interview;
  • hidden refusals, overstays or immigration history;
  • false employment letters, bank statements or reservations; and
  • using an unauthorised agent who promises a guaranteed visa.

After approval and at the border

Check your name, passport number, visa class, entries and validity. The visa expiration date is not the same as the permitted stay. After arrival, check the electronic I-94 record and follow the “admit until” date. Carry your address, return plan and supporting documents in hand luggage.

Frequently asked questions

Does a B-1/B-2 visa guarantee admission?

No. CBP decides admission at the port of entry.

Can I work in the United States on a tourist visa?

No. Ordinary employment requires an appropriate employment-authorisation route.

Can I apply outside Bangladesh?

Possibly, but applicants should normally use the post responsible for their nationality or lawful residence and follow its local instructions.
