Government jobs in Canada include federal public-service positions as well as provincial, territorial and municipal roles. They do not share one application portal or one citizenship rule. For federal roles, start with the Government of Canada’s employment portal, then read the exact “Who can apply”, essential qualifications, security and language requirements on the posting.
Reviewed September 25, 2026. This independent guide explains the federal route in detail; provincial and municipal employers set their own recruitment instructions. It is not an official government vacancy notice.
Where should you search?
The Government of Canada jobs page is the official starting point for federal public-service opportunities and links to GC Jobs. Do not assume every “government job” advertised on a commercial board is federal. A provincial health department, a city transit agency and a federal department can use different systems, pay scales and hiring conditions.
Begin with a job family—administration, policy, science, technology, finance or another field—then filter by location and by positions open to the public. Some advertisements are limited to current public servants or a defined area of selection. A result that appears in your search is not necessarily open to you.
Can a non-citizen apply?
Do not treat “government jobs” as either universally open or universally closed to foreign nationals. In external advertised federal processes, eligible veterans receive preference, followed by Canadian citizens and permanent residents, provided they meet essential qualifications. Other qualified candidates may be considered after the applicable preference order. This is a preference rule, not a promise of appointment or a substitute for legal authorisation to work. The Public Service Commission explains the order of preference for appointment.
A particular posting can also impose security, residence, language or citizenship conditions. Read it in full. If you are outside Canada, distinguish eligibility to apply from the work-authorisation you would need if selected. Our work permit guide explains that a job offer alone does not grant a permit.
How to make a federal application stronger
Federal screening often asks candidates to demonstrate each essential qualification explicitly. A statement such as “I have project-management experience” is weaker than a short example naming the project, your responsibilities, dates and result. Use the advertisement’s wording to understand what evidence is requested, but write truthfully in your own words. Asset qualifications can improve competitiveness; essential qualifications are the baseline.
Prepare your résumé and examples before the deadline. Save draft answers outside the form, check the time zone of the closing date, and confirm that the portal shows a submitted application. If you retrieve an application to change it, be sure to submit it again. Do not confuse a talent pool or inventory with a current job offer: it may be used for future hiring and may involve further assessment.
Compare the entire offer, not only salary
Government advertisements may show a pay band rather than the salary one person will receive. Appointment level, step, location, classification and negotiated terms matter. Check whether the role is indeterminate, term, casual, student or part-time and whether relocation or remote work is actually offered. Immigration status remains separate from the employer’s recruitment decision.
Before sharing personal records with anyone claiming to recruit for government, return to the agency’s own domain and find the posting there. A fee to secure a government job is a serious warning sign. The best next step is to choose a live federal advertisement and make a requirement-by-requirement evidence checklist before you apply.
