American DV Lottery Registration 2027: Status & Steps

Last reviewed: October 21, 2026. American DV Lottery Registration is the online entry stage of the U.S. Department of State’s Diversity Visa Program. It is not a Green Card application, job offer or guarantee of a visa. For DV-2027, registration had not opened on the date this guide was checked. A court-approved timetable says the Department must announce the entry period by October 29, open registration by November 1 for 30 days, and notify selected entrants by December 3. Those deadlines are subject to the pending legal challenge described below; confirm the actual opening through an official government notice before submitting information or paying.

GlobalVisora is an independent information website, not a U.S. government agency. The guidance below explains how to prepare, what to verify and how to avoid unofficial entry sites. The final instructions for the relevant program year control if they differ from this general guide.

DV-2027 registration status, dates and what the court order means

The program year can be confusing. The “2027” in DV-2027 refers to the fiscal year in which selected entrants may pursue visas; it does not mean the registration period must occur during calendar year 2027. The State Department had previously said it would announce DV-2027 entry and result dates later. A federal district court subsequently ordered the Department to carry out the delayed registration process and the parties obtained a revised timetable.

As of October 21, 2026, the reported court-approved outer deadlines were: a public announcement by October 29; registration opening by November 1 and remaining open for 30 days; and notice to selectees by December 3. The Department may act before an outer deadline. These are not confirmation that the registration form is already open, nor are they a substitute for the Department’s final entry instructions. The official Electronic Diversity Visa portal still displayed the DV-2026 closing notice and said entries were not being accepted.

There is a further uncertainty. Legal reporting on October 21 said the government had filed an appeal and asked the judge to pause the injunction while the appeal proceeds. The report said no ruling on that stay request had appeared in its checked record. An appeal or stay request is not itself a court order pausing the schedule; if a judge grants a stay, however, the timetable could change. Recheck the State Department’s notice and official entry portal immediately before acting. Do not rely on an older article, social-media post or countdown graphic.

The DV-2027 registration period is separate from the period for selected applicants to pursue visas. The Department’s earlier notice states that the DV-2027 visa application period runs from October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027. That does not mean applicants can submit a lottery entry at any time during that year. Registration must be made within the announced entry window. Our DV Lottery eligibility guide explains the education, work-experience and country-of-chargeability rules in more detail.

Check eligibility and prepare the required information

Before starting the DV-2027 online entry form, check the rules for the exact cycle. In general, the principal entrant must be chargeable to a country eligible for that program year and must meet the education or qualifying work-experience requirement. Country of chargeability is generally based on the applicant’s country of birth, not simply current citizenship, residence or passport. Limited spouse- or parent-based exceptions may apply, but they have specific conditions.

The DV-2027 eligible countries list and final program instructions should be checked when the Department publishes them. Do not assume a country’s status is permanent or copy a list from a prior year. If your birth country is not listed, check the official cross-chargeability rules before deciding whether a spouse’s or parent’s birthplace can apply to your case. A passport from an eligible country, by itself, does not establish chargeability.

The principal entrant generally needs either the required level of formal high-school education or qualifying work experience under the program’s occupation standard. Not every job qualifies, and a job title alone cannot prove that it meets the rule. Read the current instructions and keep documents that can support your education or work history if selected. A selection result will not repair an entry made by someone who did not meet the underlying eligibility requirements.

Prepare accurate details for the principal entrant and every family member the official instructions require you to list. This may include a spouse and qualifying children even if they do not plan to travel. Names, birth dates, birthplaces and marital details should match the underlying records. Do not leave out a child because the child lives elsewhere or may not immigrate; check the exact family-listing rules and exceptions for that cycle. Incorrect or incomplete family information can create serious problems later.

The current passport rule is another change from older tutorials. The State Department’s 2026 final rule requires valid, unexpired passport information and a scan of the biographic and signature page for an entrant, subject to limited exemptions. Check the final DV-2027 form instructions to see how the passport scan must be prepared and whether an exemption applies to you. Do not use a blank field as a substitute for confirming that an exemption is permitted.

Prepare a separate, recent photo for each person the form asks you to include. DV Lottery photo requirements can be technical, including image dimensions, composition and file specifications. Do not reuse a previous cycle’s photo without checking the new instructions, and do not apply filters or edits that change the person’s appearance. Our photo requirements guide covers common image mistakes; the official instructions remain controlling.

The entry fee is also different from older “free registration” explanations. A $1 DV Lottery registration fee is in effect; it is separate from the later visa-application fee if a person is selected and proceeds. Pay only through the payment process identified by the official government system. The amount charged by an optional private adviser is not a government fee. For a fuller breakdown, see our DV Lottery fees and cost guide.

Submit one entry, save the confirmation and avoid scams

When registration is officially open, use the official Electronic Diversity Visa entry portal. Read the current Department of State instructions before opening the form. The online entry is commonly identified as Form DS-5501. Complete it yourself or review every answer if you receive help. Check that the selected program year, identity details, country information, passport fields, family details and photos are correct before final submission.

Only one entry may be submitted for each person during a registration period. A second submission by the entrant, a relative or an agent does not improve the odds and can lead to disqualification. A spouse who independently qualifies may usually submit a separate entry, but each spouse must correctly list all required family members in their own form. Do not pay multiple agents to submit several entries for the same person.

Before you press submit, use this practical check:

  • Confirm the official entry window is open for the correct DV program year.
  • Compare names, dates and passport details with the original documents.
  • Check that every required family member and photo is included.
  • Pay only the fee displayed by the official government payment process.
  • Save the confirmation screen and unique confirmation number securely.

The DV Lottery confirmation number is essential. Save the confirmation page in a secure place and keep a backup that you can access later. A payment receipt, email from a helper or screenshot of an incomplete form is not the same as a successful submission confirmation. If someone assists you, keep control of the email account and make sure you personally receive the confirmation number. Do not share it in public forums or social-media comments.

Use the Department of State’s Entrant Status Check to check a result when the relevant program-year results become available. The Department does not tell entrants that they have been selected by sending a winning email or letter. A selection means the person may continue to the next stage; it does not mean a visa has been approved or issued. Our Entrant Status Check guide explains how to use the confirmation number and what to do if you lose it.

If selected, follow the instructions shown for your case. The next stage can involve an immigrant-visa application, civil records, education or work evidence, medical examination and an interview. Case number, regional visa availability, eligibility review and deadlines can affect whether the case progresses. Keep copies of what you submit and respond to official requests by the stated deadline.

Visa issuance is a separate issue from entry registration. On August 31, 2026, the State Department published guidance saying that it had paused all Diversity Visa issuances. That guidance said applicants could continue submitting applications and attending interviews, but no DV visas would be issued under the pause and there were no exceptions. A court order about reopening DV-2027 registration does not, by itself, guarantee that a selected applicant will receive a visa. Check the Department’s latest notices before spending money on travel or making major plans.

Be suspicious of sites that imitate the government portal, promise early access, sell a “reserved place,” or guarantee a Green Card. An agent cannot influence the random selection process or make an entry more likely to be chosen. Never send passport scans, payment details or identity documents to an unverified service. Use only government-published instructions and the official portal for entry and status checks.

Can I register now? As of October 21, 2026, the official portal did not show an open DV-2027 form. The court-approved timetable is subject to the pending appeal and stay request, so verify the live official notice before submitting.

Does the $1 payment guarantee selection? No. It is a registration fee, not a payment for selection, a visa interview or a Green Card.

Does being selected guarantee a visa? No. Selection only permits an eligible entrant to continue through the later process. Visa issuance, available numbers, deadlines and current government guidance still matter.
