UK Visa Requirements for UAE Residents: ETA or Visitor Visa?

Checked September 25, 2026. “UK visa requirements for UAE residents” has no single answer: the UK normally looks first at the passport nationality, not the UAE residence permit. An Emirati citizen planning an eligible short visit ordinarily follows the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) route. A resident of Dubai or Abu Dhabi holding an Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi or other visa-national passport ordinarily needs a Standard Visitor visa in advance. Use the UK government’s route checker with your own nationality and purpose before paying for anything.

Three examples that prevent the wrong application

Example one: An Emirati passport holder living in Dubai wants a two-week holiday. For an eligible visit, the ETA route may apply, subject to the current rules and any existing UK immigration permission. Example two: An Indian citizen with a UAE residence card plans the same holiday. Indian citizenship generally means a Standard Visitor visa is needed; the UAE card does not convert the traveller into an Emirati national. Example three: A British citizen resident in the UAE travels on a British passport. They do not apply for a UK visitor visa or ETA to enter as a British citizen. Different passports can therefore mean different processes within one household.

What an ETA does—and does not—do

An ETA is a travel authorisation for eligible visitors, not a visitor visa or a guarantee of admission. It is linked to the passport used in the application. Check the current official ETA eligibility guidance for the countries covered and exceptions. If your passport changes after ETA approval, review whether a new authorisation is needed before travelling. Do not rely on an outdated guide that talks about the former Electronic Visa Waiver as if it were the ordinary current process.

If you need a Standard Visitor visa

Apply online through GOV.UK for the actual purpose of your trip, pay the fee and provide biometrics and evidence as instructed. For a temporary visit, explain dates, funding, accommodation and why you will leave the UK. A UAE employment letter, regular salary, residence permission and approved leave may help a resident employee explain their circumstances, but none is an automatic approval document. If a UK relative will host you, identify what they provide and how the rest of the trip will be funded.

Check that your passport, UAE residence details and application form agree. If you are between jobs or close to the expiry of UAE permission, describe the situation honestly rather than using outdated records. Non-English or non-Welsh documents may require translations that meet UKVI specifications. Rules and fees can change, and visa-centre appointment times are separate from UKVI decision time.

Before booking

Write down the passport you will actually use, your UK travel purpose and any current UK visa or immigration status. Run those facts through the government checker. Use ETA only if your circumstances meet its eligibility rules; otherwise consider the relevant visa. For work, long-term study or settlement, do not assume visitor permission is enough.
