American DV Lottery: Registration, Requirements, Results & Eligibility

The American DV Lottery is the U.S. Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, not a tourist visa or a guaranteed Green Card. Eligible entrants take part in a random selection process. Selection provides an opportunity to pursue an immigrant visa; it does not establish eligibility, reserve a visa indefinitely or guarantee admission.

Official sources checked: September 25, 2026. This guide separates entry registration, selection and visa processing so you can identify the right next step. GlobalVisora is an independent information website, not a government agency. The featured image is an original AI-generated illustration, not an official program advertisement.

Is the American DV Lottery open now?

Do not assume a registration window is open because a website has an application form. At this check, the State Department’s DV-2027 entry-period notice still says that registration and selection-result dates will be announced. We did not find a confirmed new registration opening in the official notices reviewed.

The notice identifies October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027 as the visa application period for people selected for DV-2027. That is not an invitation for everyone to submit a lottery entry on October 1. Registration dates and the later fiscal-year processing period serve different purposes.

For DV-2026, entry registration has already ended. The published instructions identify September 30, 2026 as the deadline for eligible applicants to obtain their visas or adjustment of status. A selection notice does not extend that deadline.

There is also an important policy distinction. The State Department’s August 31 update states that the December 2025 diversity-visa issuance pause ceased to apply on August 28, 2026 following a court order. The official diversity-visa issuance notice also retains older pause-related wording. Read its dated update carefully and confirm case-specific directions with the responsible consular post. Do not treat that notice as proof that a new lottery registration window has opened or that every applicant can receive a visa.

First identify which stage you are in

Your situation The question to answer Avoid this mistake
You have never entered the relevant program year Has the government announced its entry period and instructions? Paying a website for an unannounced opening
You submitted an entry What does Entrant Status Check show for that entry? Trusting an unsolicited winning message
You were selected What are your qualification, processing and deadline requirements? Assuming selection is an approved visa

Keep the program year beside every saved document and appointment note. A screenshot about one year’s selection results cannot establish another year’s entry deadline. This simple filing habit helps prevent mistakes when search results mix old and new information.

Country eligibility is not simply your passport nationality

DV country eligibility generally follows your country of birth, rather than where you currently live or which passport you recently acquired. The eligible-country list is program-year specific. Check the applicable instructions instead of relying on a permanent worldwide list.

Limited alternative chargeability rules can involve a spouse’s or parent’s country of birth, but they have conditions. Living in an eligible country is not, by itself, an alternative. If you need one of these provisions, establish why it applies before choosing a different country on an entry.

For example, someone born in one country and employed in another should record birthplace and present residence separately. Neither an overseas employment contract nor a residence card automatically changes the country used for DV eligibility. This is a planning example, not a determination that the person qualifies.

Education or work experience: check the actual standard

The principal applicant must meet the program’s education or qualifying-work-experience requirement. The education route generally requires successful completion of formal elementary and secondary schooling comparable to a U.S. high school education. A course certificate is not automatically equivalent.

For the work route, simply having worked for two years is insufficient. The State Department describes two years of experience within the preceding five years in an occupation meeting its training and experience standard. Its guidance uses O*NET Job Zone 4 or 5 and a Specific Vocational Preparation rating of at least 7.0.

Match actual duties and evidence to the relevant occupation rather than relying on an impressive job title. If school equivalency or occupational classification is uncertain, resolve the issue before spending money on later processing. Selection cannot repair a missing qualification.

Prepare accurate entry information, not a second identity

Start with the State Department’s official DV instructions, which connect to the electronic entry website and detailed program rules. Use the instructions for the relevant year, including any newly announced identity-document requirements. Older tutorials are not a substitute for the current entry form.

Check name spelling, date and place of birth, contact details and family information against your records. Follow the specific spouse and child listing rules, including their exceptions. Do not omit required family members because they do not currently plan to travel.

Submit only one entry per person during an entry period. Multiple entries can cause disqualification. Use a compliant recent photograph; the government’s fraud guidance warns against photos older than six months. Do not let a helper invent facts or submit additional entries to claim better odds.

Before submission, review the completed information yourself. Afterwards, keep the confirmation page and maintain access to the email address used. A useful personal record contains the program year, submission confirmation and a copy of the details you supplied, stored securely rather than posted publicly.

Registration fees and visa fees are different

Do not repeat the claim that every future DV entry is necessarily free. At this check, the State Department’s current Fees for Visa Services schedule lists a US$1 DV registration fee, payable at registration by the principal applicant, and a separate US$330 DV visa application fee per person applying as a selectee.

Older DV-2026 entry instructions describe free registration. That historical wording should not override the current fee schedule or forthcoming cycle-specific payment instructions. A fee appearing in the schedule does not prove that registration is currently available.

For a hypothetical selected family of three, three $330 visa application fees would total $990. This is not the total immigration cost: medical examinations, records, travel and other applicable charges are separate. Follow the embassy’s payment instructions and remember that the visa application fee is non-refundable even if no visa is issued.

Check results yourself and recognize scam signals

Use the government’s Entrant Status Check with your confirmation number to establish whether you were selected. The State Department does not notify winners through a selection email or mailed winning letter. A reminder to check the official system is different from a message declaring that you have won.

A paid intermediary cannot improve the random selection odds. Be suspicious of demands to buy a guaranteed place, send money to an individual to release a result, or provide passwords through an unsolicited link. Navigate independently to the official instructions rather than following the message.

Keep entry-result checking separate from later visa-case tracking. Our visa application status guide explains why using the correct tracking system matters. A screenshot supplied by a stranger is not an adequate substitute for checking your own government record.

What happens after selection?

A qualified selectee proceeds with the relevant immigrant-visa steps, including Form DS-260 for the principal applicant and applying family members. Keep the submission confirmation. The Kentucky Consular Center processes information, but the interviewing consular officer determines visa eligibility.

Legitimate family changes after entry must be handled according to official instructions, with evidence. This is different from trying to conceal an existing spouse or child who should have appeared in the original entry.

When an interview is scheduled, review the post’s instructions, arrange the required examination with an authorized physician and prepare civil and qualification documents. Our visa interview preparation guide offers general organization tips; DV-specific government instructions take priority.

Do not resign, sell property or make non-refundable relocation plans solely because of selection. Your practical next step is to confirm your program year, your actual stage and the latest official instructions. The American DV Lottery is a limited immigration pathway, not a shortcut around eligibility checks or deadlines.
