British Visa USA: A UK Travel Guide for U.S. Citizens and Residents

Information checked: September 14, 2026.

Searching for British visa USA before a trip to London? The first question is not where you live in America, but which passport you hold. A U.S. citizen and a U.S. permanent resident can leave from the same airport, stay at the same hotel and still need different permission to travel to the United Kingdom.

For an ordinary short visit, U.S. citizens generally need a UK electronic travel authorisation, or ETA, rather than a Standard Visitor visa. Residents who hold another country’s passport must check the rules for that nationality. A U.S. green card does not turn its holder into a U.S. citizen or automatically provide the same UK travel privileges.

This guide covers travel from the United States to the UK for holidays, family visits and other permitted visitor activities. It does not cover British citizens applying to enter the United States.

One U.S. household can need different UK permissions

Consider a couple living in California. One partner travels on a U.S. passport; the other holds a passport from a country whose nationals require a UK visitor visa. Their U.S.-citizen child also has a separate passport. For a family holiday, the first partner and child would normally follow the ETA route, while the other partner would need to obtain a visitor visa.

This is an illustrative example, not an assessment of a particular family. Its planning lesson is important: organise the trip around the traveller with the longest application process, not the person who receives permission first.

Before paying anything, make a separate record for each traveller showing:

  • The nationality and passport they will use.
  • Whether they already have relevant UK immigration permission.
  • The purpose and proposed length of the trip.
  • Whether the result is an ETA, a visitor visa or an applicable exemption.

British and Irish passport holders, and people with permission to live, work or study in the UK, are among those exempt from the ETA requirement. Dual British citizens should check the travel-document rules for their British status instead of assuming the ordinary U.S.-visitor route applies.

For U.S. citizens: understand the ETA before applying

The ETA is permission to travel, not a guarantee of admission. Eligible visitors can normally visit for up to six months, subject to the visitor rules. Every traveller who needs an ETA must have their own, including babies and children.

The government fee is currently £20 per person. Apply using the passport you will take on the journey, an email address and an accepted payment method. The application also requires passport and facial images. Decisions usually arrive within a day, but the published guidance allows up to three working days. Wait for approval before travelling.

An ETA normally lasts two years or until the linked passport expires, whichever comes first. It does not transfer automatically to a replacement passport. A third-party application website cannot obtain a faster official decision merely because it charges more. Start with the official GOV.UK ETA guide, which links to the application service and exemption rules.

For non-U.S. citizens: separate residence from nationality

Your U.S. residence can help explain your circumstances, but it does not replace the nationality check. Do not select “United States” as your nationality simply because your home address is in Chicago or your employer is American.

For a visitor-visa application made as a resident of the United States, prepare evidence of lawful residence where relevant. Keep that evidence separate from your passport: one explains your status in America, while the other establishes your identity and nationality.

A useful way to organise the file is to use three folders: identity and residence, planned UK activities, and funding. This is an editorial organisation suggestion, not a government filing requirement. It helps prevent a common misunderstanding: uploading proof of U.S. residence does not, by itself, explain how the UK trip will be paid for or why you will leave afterwards.

How to apply for a UK visitor visa from the USA

If your circumstances require a Standard Visitor visa, the application starts online. You can normally apply up to three months before the intended journey. Complete the form, pay the applicable fee and follow the instructions to book your identity and biometric appointment.

Use the appointment locations and document-submission instructions provided through your application. Do not rely on an old blog’s mailing address or assume every applicant must send a passport to the same processing centre.

The standard six-month visitor application currently costs £135. Check the amount shown at payment rather than assuming a fixed U.S.-dollar equivalent. Optional services, where offered, should be distinguished from the government application fee.

A decision is usually made within three weeks after the application, identity and document requirements have been completed. That is not a promise covering appointment availability or every individual case. The official Standard Visitor application guidance sets out the fees, application window and next steps.

Make your U.S.-based circumstances easy to understand

Relevant supporting evidence may include employment or enrolment records, financial statements showing accessible funds, and details of a host or sponsor. If someone else pays, explain the relationship, what they will cover and how they can afford the support. Documents outside English or Welsh require an appropriate, independently verifiable translation.

For example, imagine a U.S.-based employee planning eight days in London while staying with a sibling. A clear explanation would distinguish the sibling’s accommodation offer from the employee’s responsibility for flights, meals and sightseeing. Calling the trip “fully sponsored” would be misleading if the host is only providing a room.

Write down the actual arrangement before completing the form. Ask your host to confirm anything unclear. Then compare the application with the invitation and financial evidence. The aim is consistency, not a larger stack of documents.

A second useful check is the proposed absence. If your planning notes describe eight days but another document refers to three weeks, resolve the discrepancy. Do not change a genuine document yourself; request a correction from its issuer when necessary.

Check both halves of the journey

A UK travel authorisation answers the UK question. It does not establish a non-U.S. citizen’s eligibility to return to the United States. Before departure, independently check the return documents and conditions applicable to your U.S. status. Seek qualified advice if travel could affect a pending immigration application.

Also distinguish a UK visit from a connection through a UK airport. Whether you pass border control can matter. Ask the airline about luggage collection, terminal transfers and airport changes before choosing a ticket. A cheap connection is not useful if you have not checked the permission that the actual journey requires.

For family travel, keep a simple departure checklist: every required decision received, correct passport for each permission, accommodation details available and the return journey reviewed. Avoid treating one family member’s approval email as confirmation for everyone.

Questions to settle before booking

Can I work in Britain with an ETA or visitor visa?

Neither is a general work authorisation. Some business activities are permitted, but taking employment with a UK company normally requires a different route. Check the activity itself rather than assuming a short stay makes it acceptable.

Does a six-month visit mean I can live in the UK half the year?

Not automatically. Visitors must not use frequent or successive trips to make the UK their main home. The permitted duration is not a substitute for meeting the genuine-visitor requirements.

Should I buy flights to strengthen a visa application?

Do not treat a purchased ticket as proof that approval will follow. GOV.UK advises waiting for the visa decision before booking travel. You can plan dates and estimate expenses without turning every estimate into a non-refundable purchase.

What is the safest starting point for a British visa USA search?

Identify your passport nationality, existing UK status and actual purpose first. Then use the relevant government application route. That sequence helps U.S.-based travellers avoid paying for the wrong permission, overlooking a family member or following instructions intended for a different type of visit.
