UK Visit Visa for Family and Friends: Invitations and Sponsor Support

Sources checked: 13 September 2026.

Visiting a relative or friend in the UK often involves two sets of information: your own circumstances and the support offered by your host. A UK visit visa application should connect them clearly. An invitation can explain a visit, but it does not replace the applicant’s need to qualify.

Agree on the arrangements with your host

Before drafting a letter, discuss the proposed dates, accommodation and expenses. Ask whether the host is offering a room, paying for flights, contributing spending money or simply inviting you to meet. These are different arrangements and should be described accurately.

For example, a cousin may provide accommodation for twelve nights while you pay for flights, meals and local travel. In that situation, describing the visit as entirely funded by the cousin would obscure the real agreement. This example is a planning aid, not a required sponsorship formula.

Write an invitation that explains the visit

A useful letter can identify the host and visitor, explain their relationship, state the proposed dates and describe the reason for meeting. Add the accommodation address and contact details where relevant. Keep the wording factual and make sure the host is comfortable confirming the arrangements.

A suggested structure is a short introduction, a paragraph explaining the occasion and a paragraph identifying the support. Avoid adding promises about approval or claiming authority over the immigration decision. The letter should explain what the host knows and intends to provide.

Match sponsorship claims to evidence

The official guidance for sponsored visitors asks for evidence of the relationship, the support offered, the sponsor’s ability to provide it and lawful UK status where applicable. Select relevant records rather than sending an unrelated collection of household documents.

Under the Visitor Immigration Rules, third-party support can count when the applicable conditions are met. However, sponsorship does not remove the genuine-visitor assessment. A host’s income should not be presented as automatic proof that the visitor qualifies.

Keep the visitor’s circumstances visible

Prepare your own explanation of why this visit fits your life outside the UK. Relevant circumstances might include employment, studies, a business or family responsibilities. Use facts that are true for you; do not manufacture commitments because another applicant mentioned them online.

Someone taking annual leave could organise the proposed dates alongside their leave arrangements. A retired traveller may have a different explanation. Neither should copy the other’s narrative. The application should remain understandable even when the host’s invitation is read separately.

Review both sides before submission

Compare the invitation with your form and budget. Check names, dates, addresses and who pays each expense. If the host offers only accommodation, your documents should explain the remaining costs. Resolve contradictions before uploading the material.

Use clearly labelled files and retain the version actually submitted. If plans change, discuss the revised arrangements promptly and follow any applicable reporting instructions. A supportive host can make a visit practical, but permission still depends on the individual application. This guide concerns a temporary visit, not relocating to join family in the UK.
